about
Tanukichan has had a very busy 2023. In March, she released her second record, GIZMO, which Gorilla vs Bear called a “shoe-gazy dream-pop gem.” Hannah van Loon and her new live band have headlined shows across North America, opened for Melanie Martinez, supported Alvvays and Alex G’s summer tour, and are embarking on another headlining tour. Together they wrote a new song “NPC” (or “Non-player Character,” a term familiar to gamers). At home, it’s easy to blend into the background when you’re surrounded by strangers or hiding away. This song is about enjoying that anonymity, “feels kind of nice to disappear” van Loon sings, atop fuzzed-out, reverb-soaked riffs and alt-metal drums.
lyrics
"No one’s talking to me
I’m an NPC, hair in a scrunchie
Like any other day
It’s a little cold, put my hoodie on
It’s not a let down
Feels kind of nice to disappear
Returning something broken
Heading to Lowe’s and I’m a little frozen
But I’ll be back tomorrow, player one hero
Got somewhere I’m supposed to be
Na na, na na
Feels kind of nice to disappear
I think I kind of like it
I’m a little frozen
Now I’m home alone staring at my phone
Sinking into the drone
But i’ll be back tomorrow, player one hero
Got somewhere I’m supposed to be
"

Shoegaze ist die Kunst des Dröhnens, doch „Everything Is Alive“ setzt diese Elemente nur sparsam ein. Statt Hall- und Zerr-Sounds aufzutürmen, schäumt die Musik in feinen Bläschen über.

Alvvays has always been great, but with this album they took it to the next level. Every one of these songs is lodged in my brain now, permanently (in a good way). s. moxley
